"Echoes of a Winter Journey" . Inspired by Schubert

This is music of memory. Music for lying on the floor at midnight. Contemplative, melancholy, fragile, beautiful.

For Paul Hankinson, creating a solo piano album felt like going home. "It took me a while to realise that the simplicity of the piano, the gentle familiarity of that emotional landscape I've been exploring my whole life, is enough. There is music in silence too, in the in-betweens."

In the past years no other young European jazz trio has evoked as many exuberant reactions as the Austrian formation Mario Rom’s INTERZONE. Just recently the sensational energy of their concerts led the young trio to the Montreal Jazz Festival, which was readily combined with another invitation to the renowned Rochester Jazz Festival, where they had played before. And even at these top-class festivals, INTERZONE doesn’t need to shun any comparison: “Never before, no matter where in this world, have I heard a group of musicians that - in the truest sense of the word - ‘plays’ together as incredibly as this trio. Certainly one of the most exciting and entertaining acts of the festival - an absolute must-see!” one of the main critics wrote. Such reactions in the American press are certainly noteworthy for an Austrian band with an age average of 30 years. And the trio, consisting of Mario Rom (born 1990), Lukas Kranzelbinder (born 1988) and Herbert Pirker (born 1981), really has been working inimitably consequently on their unique sound and image these past years. . . . read more

Lisbeth Quartett - There Is Only Make

Not only philosophers and quantum physicists know that time is relative. The Lisbeth Quartet has always had its own concept of time. This becomes apparent through the inner ease with which the band develops its sometimes transparent, sometimes dense music, in the studio and on stage. And through Charlotte Greve’s profound, partly lyrical and in the best sense timeless compositions that unite depth and unobtrusive lightness. The latter primarily results from Greve’s sensitive and masterful playing as well as her vibrant, floating saxophone tone. With patient determination, the Lisbeth Quartet has come a long way. It was founded in 2009, divided equally between New York and Berlin since 2012 and awarded a Jazz-Echo as newcomer of the year for its second CD Constant Travellers. The follow-up Framed Frequencies (01/2014) also received high praise, even internationally. “[Greve’s] music is an exciting and energetic process with subtle movement, stripped down to the bare essentials, down to an aesthetic of distinctive moods and intense emotion,” the Financial Times Germany wrote, and the Fono Forum said, “The quartet entices with compositions that are truly of our time, with a seasoned technique and a multi-faceted sound.” . . . read more

Erika Stucky - Papito

Erika Stucky is always full of surprises. Over a period of almost 25 years the singer, musician, songwriter and multimedia-artist has made many exciting international connections, for example with Dino Saluzzi, Carla Bley and even a guest appearance with Elvis Costello. Furthermore, she has developed many individual, often stunning, stylistically diversified formations during this time. Stucky’s newest work is starting a new chapter with unexpected content. Even in relation to her already courageous repertoire thus far, Papito seems audacious. The charismatic American-Swiss is joined by a Baroque ensemble, the widely celebrated countertenor Andreas Scholl and by FM Einheit, who is known as an unconventional percussionist, sound designer and also as creative force of the Einstürzende Neubauten. Considering this spectacular constellation, it is no wonder that Stucky’s variable voice develops facets that had seldom been heard until now. Without holding back any musical beauty she literally indulges herself in melodies and in sought out moments slips in touching crooning through trenchantly rough expression. . . . read more

CD 4647

Outspoken: direct, straightforward, upfront. That is how the new and third album of Masaa sounds. Three years have passed since the release of the CD Afkar. Concert tours in Rabih Lahoud's former home Lebanon and also to Jordan, Ethiopia, Mozambique, Rwanda and Zimbabwe have inspired the award-winning band and made them grow together. Masaa's characteristic combination of individual influences sounds more lively, spirited and natural now. While Afkar was an impressive snapshot of a search in progress, Outspoken documents the powerful result of a patient and focused development. Masaa artfully interweave Arabic melodies with variable, sometimes prancing rhythms, a piano changing between Classical influences and jazz, and multicolored trumpet modulations. Furthermore, Lahoud's characteristic singing sounds fuller in all ranges and more confident than ever.

Tell Her
CD 4642
file under: jazz
release February 3, 2017
order from amazon.de

When the first duo album of Veronika Harcsa and Bálint Gyémánt was released in 2014 it sparked enthusiastic reactions among press and audience. The vast reduction to vocals and guitar lets the songs on Lifelover sound extraordinarily transparent, direct and intimate, at the same time the duo fascinatingly exhibits a stylistic range from jazz to artful pop facets. But most captivating of all, is Harcsa’s exceptionally variable voice. When she lightly skips through octaves, varies tempos or cuts capers scatting, she unites outstanding talent and juvenile wit. „Harcsa is an amazingly versatile musician, a brilliant vocalist and gifted entertainer in the best sense. She has found her very own thing and performed it on a high level with great impact.” (allaboutjazz.com)

The songs of the new album Tell Her present a refinement of expression through compositional sophistication and clever details. The courageous expansion of dynamics is especially apparent. Veronika Harcsa and Bálint Gyémánt fathom the substantial depth that is inherent in quiet passages and long notes. Therein Harcsa’s involvement with other projects, which are set in the domain of Classical music, is also reflected. The song Give Time for example, is inspired by J.S. Bach’s cello suites. At the same time producer Jeremy Friedman contributed ideas that carefully broaden the spectrum of sounds. ... reade more

"The new album is innovative and neoclassical at the same time, uplifting and astonishing, the most serious work the singer-songwriter produced so far. She proved again, that she is willing to leave the beaten path for the sake of playing and experimenting. As she mentions in her lyrics, she is "moving anticlockwise", which makes her one of the most versatile and exciting performers of our time."
ujszo.com

"I've heard many voice and guitar duos, but non of them has such a full-bodied and rich sound, and only few of them can fill the songs with so much life with just one guitar. Veronika's voice is brilliantly clear, tender and strong. Not only is her technique uniquely versatile, but she is also very creative vocally. The shifts she can produce in her voice are so precise and subtle, as if she was playing an instrument."

As a guitarist, Arne Jansen has never thought in genre categories. The ECHO prizewinner has already played a special role, particularly in Germany, with his first two trio albums. Melodic compositions, transparent arrangements and a warm guitar sound have been his trademark to this day. On his new album Nine Firmaments there are many "songs without words" and some of them, quickly and without any detours, make their way into our consciousness where they seem to have always felt at home. Jansen prefers clear lines and avoids unnecessary exhibitionism. Today, more than ever, he is motivated by his selective choice of the means he uses to develop intense atmospheres and stronger statements. This does not rule out that at times his fingers dance over the strings with their very own aesthetic approach. . . . read more

Schönheit durch Zerbrechlichkeit
CD 4636
file under: jazz
release October 7, 2016
order at amazon.de

To get right to the point: Enjuti combine rock emphasis and jazz ideas with current electronic sounds. To further understand the individual charisma of the quartet, it takes a few more words. Almost catchy melodies meet surprising harmonic changes and roving passages. Straight grasping beats disintegrate into broken rhythms or intermit completely for a while. Abstract sounds spurt out from effect and looper pedals or are formed by manipulations inside the piano. Meandering motifs, clear riffs and complex structures meet, merge together and unleash tremendous bursts of energy. The love of freedom of the four musicians manifests itself in a constant tension between cleverly worked out compositions and pointed improvisation, whereby the latter generally refrains from traditional solos and seldom drifts off into complete dissonance. When playing live, also the originally quite compact pieces can stretch to unforeseeable trips with hypnotic intensity. Enjuti’s dramatic composition is as unconventional as fascinating: fine, barely audible single notes gradually grow into powerful, at times drone-like monolithic walls of sound, which eventually dissolve time and space and transfer the fascinated audience into other spheres. . . . read more

Music and life. Art, no matter in which form, is always most authentic when it reflects life. Not only a certain aspect of life, but rather life with its enticing but equally merciless and often quite paradox diversity. The young Berlin based pianist Clara Haberkamp is alive. This sounds so basic and trivial, that it actually shouldn’t be mentioned here at all. But for Clara Haberkamp there is no separation between her life and music. She doesn’t postulate the proverbial “living for her music” and doesn’t play music to live, but life and music are simply one to her, and the new CD makes this very clear. . . . read more

Their latest album Tiden was released in 2013 and after its release tour, Aino Löwenmark and Hanmari Spiegel decided on an artistic break, without breaking up Fjarill for good though. “Hanmari and I harmonize perfectly and thus of course the records we make together are very harmonious as well,” Aino Löwenmark states. “On my own album I wanted to create new soundscapes and extend the familiar combination of piano, violin and vocals.”

In the past years Strom & Wasser [Power & Water], lead by their singer, songwriter, bass player and producer Heinz Ratz, have concerned themselves primarily with German realities. In 2011 Ratz visited many local refugee camps on his Tour of a Thousand Bridges. He thereafter put together the award-winning project The Refugees with musicians and vocalists that he had met there on his tour. Prior to this, Ratz, born in 1968, called attention to homelessness and pollution with spectacular campaigns; three of his productions received the “Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik“ [German Record Critics' Award]. With the double album Reykjavík,a new cycle begins. It is the first of a planned series, in which Strom & Wasser work together with musicians from different European cultural metropolises. To Ratz this project is also about unforeseen encounters, fresh impressions and lively exchange.

Why turn the attention towards Europe now? While the whole world is discussing the debts of Greece and other southern countries, Heinz Ratz is irritated that the originally humanistic European idea is increasingly being drowned in financial discussions. . . . read more

When these four musicians come together they know exactly what to expect from each other - not only in the studio, but especially in a live performance where the music functions even more intuitive. When they play, the joy of improvising and their inventiveness turn into unrestrained spontaneity. The new album was recorded live in concert and is the product of the last thirty concerts the quartet played.
“Lisbeth LIVE” is much more than a live-update of the current state of a continuously working ensemble that is internationally present. The Lisbeth Quartett uses familiar and well-known elements, and then in turn uses them in a new contemporary context. After three successful studio albums “Lisbeth LIVE” takes their combined talent and ingenuity to the next level.

Matthias Loibner - „Lichtungen“ [Glades]

Europe-wide there are not many musicians, who have committed themselves entirely to the hurdy-gurdy. Virtuosos, who sustainably widen the ancestral horizon of this instrument, are even more rare. Matthias Loibner has played and studied folk and baroque music. He was the first to record Joseph Haydn’s compositions for Lira Organizzata, the organ lyre, as well as pieces from Vivaldi and Chedeville. But furthermore, Loibner entered new terrain for the hurdy-gurdy, was inspired by traditional music from the Balkans to East Africa, interpreted Schubert’s “Winterreise” [Winter Journey], fathoms connections to jazz and experiments with electronics. Thereby he often works with prominent and sometimes equally style-defining partners, for example the nonconformists of folk music Deishovida, the pan-European Sandy Lopicic Orkestar, the Jazzbigband Graz, the avant-garde trumpeter Franz Hautzinger, the singer Nataša Mirkovic and the Ensemble Baroque de Limoges. In addition, Loibner was involved in film and theatre productions with Hubert von Goisern, Henning Mankell, Dimiter Gotscheff and many others. . . . read more

With pianist Sebastian Sternal and drummer Jonas Burgwinkel, who have both already received Jazz-Echo awards for their own productions, as well as with bassist Joscha Oetz, Die Verwandlung heads into a different musical direction than Köster’s previous quartet. The quartet already brought him the Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis [New German Jazz Prize], an Echo award as well and international concerts from Mexico to India and at the North Sea Festival. . . . read more

With vibraphone many associate rhythm and grooves, others possibly think of complex harmonic cascades. Karl Ivar Refseth can certainly play all of this, as you can hear on the first productions of the Andromeda Mega Express Orchestra, with the Tied & Tickled Trio with Billy Hart and since more than four years with Germany’s most innovative indie-rock band The Notwist. For his own album Praying, the Berlin-based Norwegian created an individual aesthetic. “When I compose, I sometimes also think in structures, but have only really accomplished my aim, when I can feel a special enchantment in the music,” Refseth explains. “That is why there are many melodies on this album, that are likeable in the same way as a pop-song.” Ultimately it is about playing something you really mean and not just trying to be cool, Refseth thinks. “Music can make strong statements, sometimes particularly in quiet, meditative moments.” . . . read more

No other young jazz-band in the last years in Germany has caused such a stir as Max Andrzejewski’s “Hütte“ [Hut]. Terms like newcomer, insider tip, talent or white hope are easily at hand for musicians under thirty, but the quartet with backgrounds in Cologne and Berlin was already a considerable step beyond the status of recommendation with their debut-album. The band of the drummer Max Andrzejewski took the German jazz-scene by storm.

With “Hütte und Chor” [Hut and Choir] “Hütte” is now striking out for their second blow. The name says it all. As we know already, “Hütte” are Max Andrzejewski on drums, Johannes Schleiermacher on saxophone, Andrzejewski’s Siamese twin Tobias Hoffmann on guitar and Andreas Lang on bass. Additionally there’s the choir under the direction of Tobias Christl, with Friederike Merz, Sarah Whitteron, Zola Mennenöh and Laura Winkler. This choir is not just a choir, but rather an assortment of five vocal soloists, who have - just like the instrumentalists of this constellation - each left their own individual trace on German jazz grounds. . . . read more

The Waltz Of Our Hundred Kids

Where exactly are the borders between jazz on one side and folk, rock and pop on the other? In what exactly do American traditions differ from the musical lore of Europe? And what makes the Alpine peaks different from the mountaintops of the Rocky Mountains? All these questions turn up, when you listen to the debut album of the Pichler brothers.

In Austria the rhythm-twins Andreas and Matthias Pichler are long regarded as the insider-tip of the national jazz-scene. Wolfgang Muthspiel never tired of highly praising the twins, born 1981 in Tirol, when they backed him in 2005 on his album “Bright Size” and three years later again on “Earth Mountain”, because their urge to spinning musical tales, guided the guitarist to whole new horizons. In New York the Pichlers enhanced their jazz portfolio first-hand. By now the two bold sound-adventurers have traded the peaks of the Alps of Tirol for the street-canyons of Berlin. Always steadfastly on the road in Europe and America, they picked up whatever they found along the wayside, to drop it all onto their own, accentually casual style of playing. . . . read more

Highly ambitioned large ensembles aren’t exactly scarce in the German jazz-landscape. Unfortunately only a few big bands succeed in adding new colors to the jazz of our times or in adjusting to current listening desires. The young Berlin-based singer and composer Laura Winkler and her Wabi-Sabi Orchestra are now finding a whole new approach.

When she describes the music of her first CD “Paper Clips”, Laura Winkler avoids the term big band. This is not because she wanted to distance herself from conventional jazz orchestras, but because the portfolio of the Wabi-Sabi Orchestra is far bigger. The range goes from chamber-musical structures to precisely devised voice-formations, for which the instrumentation has supporting character in the background at most, and all the way to juicy jazz arrangements. The classically blaring horn section does not appear on this album though. . . . read more

Lifelover

Clarity is a rare asset in jazz. So rare, that it attracts attention straightaway, when an artist has the courage to have absolute transparency. Veronika Harcsa is a Hungarian singer and songwriter, whose greatest strength lies exactly in this clarity, which enchants and bedazzles instantly. She reaches the listener without any detours, gets by without any mysticisms and her voice knows only the most direct way from the soul into the ear. Her unmistakable combination of timbre, structure and responsiveness consistently result in this rare trait: clarity.

The setting on ?Lifelover? is very simple. Veronika Harcsa sings, Blint Gymnt plays acoustic guitar. Here and there they loop some things and work with additional tracks; done! Also beyond the tonal attribution the roles are clearly defined. Veronika Harcsa is responsible for the tender, emotional level. Blint Gymnt assumes the abstract, cooler part. And still the intentions of the two musicians interfuse to such an extent, that they seem to merge to a single artistic personality. ... read more

Do you know Tobias Preisig? Exactly, the highly acclaimed jazz-violinist from Switzerland, who set new standards between the virtuoso playfulness of jazz and the obstreperous directness of alternative rock with his CD “In Transit” in 2012. The record invited the listener to dauntlessly yell out “Keep it up!” Now “Drifting”, the new release of the violinist and his quartet, is available. Therefore it is worthwhile asking again: Do you really know Tobias Preisig? Because if you believed so far, that you can straightforwardly answer this question with a definite “Yes”, then you will get to know him in a whole new way on “Drifting”. . . . read more

30 years ago it was a Lebanese, who was the first to set standards for the fusion of Arabic tradition and western jazz. One generation after the success of the oud-master Rabih Abou-Khalil, the conditions for teamwork between orient and occident have changed. The bridging of cultures is no longer exotic. Now it has a completely natural exchange. The creative flow unearths an immense palette of musical perspectives, creates completely new homelands in and for music. The bold vanguard in the new qualities of this encounter is the quartet Masaa – and with the poet, composer and singer Rabih Lahoud the focus is once again on a man with his roots in Lebanon.read more

It’s that simple: you take three musicians and three dozens of instruments, a few favorite songs, you go to the studio and just start playing. The array of the set up of the musical adventure park of Random/Control was probably the most complicated part of the two-day session in the Traumton-Studio in Berlin. During the “sporty instrument changeovers” several “accidents” happened, David Helbock reports. However, nothing can be heard of these on his new CD – quite the contrary! “Actors inspire me much more than music does”, Erika Stucky asserted in an interview already years ago. “When Jeanne Moreau totters through a movie classic, I immediately think of at least three song lyrics.” Movie characters play primary roles in Stucky’s songs again and again, sometimes as diffuse visions, another time as clearly recognizable characters. For a long time now, the artist from Zurich has been making her own short films for her stage programs, in which at times, she newly interprets well-known scenes in an individualistic style. If you carefully examine the booklet of Black Widow, you will find a cunning allusion to this genre there too. ? read more

Liederseelen

Astonishing, surprising, controversial: in their “favourite project”, singer-songwriter Bobo (“ ...in white wooden houses”) and sound artist Sebastian Herzfeld give new life to well-known and unfamiliar German folk songs and poems of the Romantic period. Bobo sings these songs about great human emotions – love and pain, hope and fear, homesickness and longing – in a way that makes you feel as if you have never listened to them before. Sebastian Herzfeld sits enthroned at his prepared piano, between an array of other unusual instruments. A unique mixture of folk, jazz, pop and experiment!

100% Results

release February 22, 2013

Where jazz ends for other bands, is where it begins for Yakou Tribe!
Great rock-bands celebrate their big anniversaries after decades, sometimes even after half a century, with a dozen albums or so. In jazz this is different. Jazz bands meet for one album and if it goes particularly well and the egos are half-way in tune with each other this might lead to a second production. So when a jazz-group releases four solid albums with the same line-up of musicians, this is quite the sensation. Especially when this happens in the great boiler Berlin. The quartet Yakou Tribe however, has never had a problem breaking with the customs of jazz. “100% Results” is in fact the fourth record to date of the Berliner band and it celebrates once more the colorful, vibrant life.

It’s only a game, a game with terms and associations and the semantic fields that they call forth. When the pianist Sebastian Sternal was naming his new project, in which he enlarged the fine sound of his piano trio to include a four-piece horn section and a string quartet, and then named the project “Sternal Symphonic Society”, he knew exactly what reaction he could expect: A very large format comes to mind, a mega power plant of feelings with its elaborate machinery, its carefully drawn blueprints and its excess of details. Lingering in the background as well, we are reminded of symphonic societies, of that bourgeois circle that manufactured discourse, that once helped the composer to direct significance and meaning into his compositions. On the one hand.

Advanced chemistry instead of advanced culture! Acid: corrosive yet indispensable for industrial i.e. productive processes. Material is moved, dismantled and reassembled. Aggregate states change. That which once appeared to be solid and unalterable, suddenly dissolves in a hissing stream of steam. All this produces friction, heat and noise. The effort varies, at times it only takes a few seconds and then again, ten minutes may hardly be enough.

The Zodiak Trio from Essen is preparing to strike for their third time. But what’s with Essen? The trumpet player John-Dennis Renken and the guitar player Andreas Wahl still both come from that metropolitan city in the Ruhr region, which is renowned for its indecisive relationship to tradition and progress. However, the drummer Bernd Oezsevim set up camp in Berlin ages ago. That means the Zodiak Trio belongs to the currently extremely fertile Berlin – NRW axis which can also be described with groups like Grünen, Bellbird, Tobias Hoffman’s Fallschirme, Expressway Sketches and more. But the trio’s efficiency factor reaches far beyond the east-west latitude of German jazz events. The Zodiak Trio needs to be measured according to international standards. ... read more

David Helbock has not only recently been regarded as an enfant terrible of young European jazz. Even those who have never heard a single note by the keyboard wizard from Vorarlberg probably associate his outer appearance with that ruffled, gaunt, bearded face under his characteristic woolen hat with the piano keyboard design, something not easily forgotten. Helbock has what it takes to become an icon. However, underneath his striking headgear a variety of musical ideas merge together. These range from ingenious to the obvious, but can only be combined in his head and may appear to outsiders as occupying opposing positions. ... read more

Strom & Wasser featuring The Refugees

This project is truly one of a kind: During the spring of 2011 Heinz Ratz and his band Strom und Wasser visited almost 80 refugee camps throughout Germany. Appalled by the refugees? hopeless situation, by a jurisdiction seemingly at odds with democratic principles and human rights, by the intellectual stasis forced upon the refugees, by paternalism, by unacceptable sanitary conditions and insufficient medical attention, Heinz Ratz and his band looked for a way to turn all of that misery into something beautiful after all. Among the hundreds of refugees they met inside the camps were also numerous musicians, some of them of world-class calibre and famous artists in their home countries. As refugees, these musicians are not permitted to travel or to work, oftentimes they cannot even afford an instrument and are forced into a life of silence and inadequacy. Ratz invited these musicians to Hamburg and recorded their music. The result is a strikingly modern, fresh and bold record featuring almost 30 musicians from Gambia, Iran, Afghanistan, Kenia, Russia, Ivory Coast, Germany, Kosovo, Somalia, Ethopia, Macedonia, Greece and many other nations. Music that was caught inside the refugee camps, at risk of being unheard and forgotten. With this project this music will now hopefully find its way into the hearts of many people: Strom & Wasser featuring The Refugees.

The critics rave: “A remarkable debut!”, and “A discovery among female jazz singers in 2010”, about the singer Fjoralba Turku, who released her first CD, “Joshua”, one and a half years ago. Certainly, this was early praise for the promise she had made to transfer the songs and the language of her native country, Albania, into the cosmos of jazz, using her unexpectedly powerful and astonishingly mature voice. Astonishment is now turning into enthusiasm: Fjoralba Turku’s second album, “Serene”, confirms the praise and great expectations. She impressively demonstrates her greatest talent: Telling stories in song.

Martin Klein is a songwriter, composer and pianist from Vienna, Austria.
Endlessly inventive, no two plays of him ever seem quite the same. From broken rhythms to beautiful piano chords he has carved out a sophisticated niche of his very own.
"Sometimes you get the chance to hear a young player that you don't know but who is able to force your attention immediately to the beauty of music. Martin Klein managed to do this for me every time I heard him play with even the simplest material. Less is more is maybe a credo that would certainly imply to this great talent."

At the beginning, there is the alpenhorn. Then, there are the first few overtones. Bizarre sounds are generated before images of the sublime world of mountains. ?stimmhorn? leave behind all categories and pass beyond all genres: with references to various musical styles and combined with theatrical elements, the duo, using the means of instrument and voice, invents acoustic voyages between traditional and experimental worlds of sound. For their innovative joy in experimentation, Zehnder/Streiff have been given numerous award-winning commissions. ?stimmhorn? have become a label for a mixture of foreign and familiar sounds of the land from the Alps.

A short story by Montmorensy about getting lost and found in cyberspace

Sankt Oberholz
On a dusty corner in Berlin stands a grand old café called Sankt Oberholz. Inside you may find the odd table of friends, the odd couple having an awkward first date… but what will strike you upon entering is the number of people sitting alone with their macs (it is rare to encounter a pc person!) .. it’s strangely beautiful to see all the lonely people together.. lonely together.. einsam zusammen.. a very modern phenomenon ...

A very warm welcome to the Montmorensy app. Step into my world! A world full of dreams and dilemmas, of melancholy and madness, of stars and symphonies. A world in which the crows are persistently ecstatic, the bees are disappearing, the goldfish are losing their minds, Beethoven is causing all kinds of trouble, the stars are being flung out of their galaxies, green grass is staining and tainting the great ice continent and beauty is as fleeting and elusive as ever. And the ducks? Well.. the ducks are quite content. But who the duck *is* Montmorensy? Montmorensy is a crazed composer, a piano-poet, a star-gazer, a day-dreamer, a dizzy thinker, a silly soul, a wanderer, a wonderer… Montmorensy is a renaissance man trapped in modern times. He likes to stay home in his pyjamas. He has an orchestra trapped in his head! Please enjoy my music, photos and videos. And explore my website ... I hope this app leads the way to some moments of appiness. :-)

Schmelz
Vocalist, voice artist, yodeler or throat singer? Swiss musician Christian Zehnder is all of these, but this idiosyncratic performer in all his dazzling variety defies categorization. Archaic, urban and spheric his sound-world dishevels Swiss idioms through storms and chinooks, with critical clear views of the higher reaches of the Alps lost in reverie. For the first time he melts his non-verbal vocal artistry with lyrics in german and french and defines his very own imaginative alpine music between past and future on "Schmelz".

HENOSIS is a composition by the drummer and composer Eric Schaefer for chamber ensemble. Free-tonal lyricism, multi-layered rhythms and a polyphonic disposition form the shimmering complexity of the work. Nuances of texture and colors in sound are achieved by an intricate use of different instrument groupings such as solo violin, string quartet or a tutti of nine players.

"The Zodiak Trio pulses with energy, even when it’s playing slowly and softly; the restless impulse to uncover and explore new possibilities is ever-present in this trio’s work. But that is far from the entire story. I know John-Dennis and Andreas, and I’ve played with them (and I’d like to get to know Bernd as well), and I’ve experienced for myself the sense of fun they bring to making music. I think it was Gil Evans who described this balance of serious intentions and play as “a party with a purpose.”"

"Swiss saxophonist Christoph Grab’s quintet is steering towards a playground located in the middle of the sci-fi milieu of the swinging 1960’s. Using trashy guitars, lots of electronic gurgling, whining, and just plain noise, the crew has set down their space ship smack dab in the middle of sector B. Voice samples of American politicians and other contemporaries darken the horizon, with the second track at the very latest you feel like you’ve landed in a vintage German TV series, and in the end an imaginary screen fills up with characters straight from Ennio Morricone. Grab’s lonely saxophone howls to soul minor chords, the bass clarinet wanders through a low-life bar gig beside wobbling conga beats, a synthesizer sounds out messages from outer space. Still, all the nostalgic tunes the oldies fans think they are recognizing here only serve these seasoned musicians as a ground for surprising little outbursts of noise, cultivated urban twang, and every now and then mini-interludes of the sheer Zappa-esque - just for fun." Pianist and composer Nicolai Thräichen conglomerated some of Berlin's best jazz musicians into a body of sound that he bent and kneaded until his compositions became dancing sculptures that could rear up to a thundering big band, only to slim down neatly the next moment to something akin to Giacometti's chamber music. And he tops the whole thing with Michael Schiefel's voice, androgynous, sensuous, wired, virtuoso, in a nutshell: totally manic. Concerts, Workshops
5 to 16 October 2009
Johannesburg, Antananarivo, Dar es Salaam, Maputo

The Trio TUOMI, comprising alto singer, piano and double bass, is one of the most remarkable products of the great Berlin jazz melting pot.
German-Finnish vocalist Kristiina Tuomi and pianist Carsten Daerr first started setting Shakespeare sonnets to music while studying jazz together in Berlin. Portuguese bassist and Berlin transplant Carlos Bica, who has been making quite a splash for some time now with his band Azul, then completed the trio.
Their debut album Tightrope Walker, already acclaimed in insider circles, was followed in 2007 by the CD "Th‘ Expense of Spirit", which proved once and for all that TUOMI is not about putting on song recitals with accompaniment, but a congenial trio at work, with a unique blend of Scandinavian folk, jazzy pop, Shakespeare-inspired art song and Mediterranean Saudade.
” TUOMI enthrals listeners,” raved one radio reviewer under the spell of their latest album. Audiences south of the Equator will be likewise spellbound by their upcoming Africa tour.

Mental Radio

CD 4505-2
file under: Pop
Release June 29, 2007 digital only

CD "Mental Radio" available from the website of Bobo In White Wooden Houses and via mailorder from Traumton's cd shop.
Worldwide digital release scheduled for June 29, 2007.

Finally! Bobo In White Wooden Houses is back with a new album – and it seems like she had not even been away. Almost ten years have passed since her highly successful 1990s releases on Universal Music and her appearance as the angel’s voice on Rammstein’s famous song „Engel“. But Bobo’s most beautiful voice – crystal clear, fragile, unique – still sends shivers down your spine.
„Mental Radio“ seamlessly hooks up with Bobo’s earlier works. Once again she presents an inexhaustible source of timeless melodies and brilliant pop arrangements which you would never want to miss.
Welcome back, Bobo. We hope you’ll be around for a while.

Lieder von Liebe und Tod - Songs of Love and Death

CD 4504-2
file under: Folk / Pop/ Other
Release May 11, 2007
Have a listen at MySpace

"A pretty serious candidate for album of the year is what vocalist Bobo presents us under the title of "Lieder von Liebe und Tod" /"Songs of Love and Death" (Traumton 4504/Indigo). German folk songs and most especially some of the great German poems, mostly classical or from the romantic era, are congenially put to music and very sparingly arranged here by Sebastian Herzfeld. He works absolutely eclectically - sometimes it sounds like an acoustic version of Pink Floyd, sometimes like Philip Glass's minimalistic film music - and yet this music is primarily one thing: a picture artistically set in motion, or even better: a scene of drama, perfected, crafted by means of music. Bobo interprets these magnificent lyrics with a clarity and sincerity that doesn't only open up the ears, but that which mythical tradition has inscribed in all these songs: the soul. Her singing is a guide to sensibility. These unusual and not only commercially risky recordings are of a consistant brilliance that literally gives you the shivers. Whoever opens up to this grandiose miniature music theater, this common people's cosmos , will leave it rewarded beyond imagination. New standards are being set here."
Jazzpodium, June 2007, Volker Doberstein

Echoes of home - on yelping and other forms of song
Director: Stefan Schwietert

What does a baby's cry have in common with the echo of a mountain yodler, and what connects the head tone of a Tuvin nomad with the stage show of a vocal artist? The answer is: THE VOICE. Against a background of powerful alpine vistas and modern city landscapes, „heimatklänge” enters the wondrous sonic world of three exceptional Swiss vocal artists, - Erika Stucky  -   Noldi Alder  -  Christian Zehnder -. Their universe of sound extends far beyond what we would describe as singing. In their engagement with local and foreign traditions, the powerful mountain landscape becomes a stage as do the landscapes and sonic backdrops of modern life.

Hippie picnics in San Franciscos Golden Gate Park to a flowery soundtrack of the Monkees, Donovan and Nancy Sinatra. Then suddenly the scene changes abruptly to mountain valleys, yodelling choruses and polka folk in traditional Swiss costume with the Valais Alps looming on the horizon. How a child can handle such a disparate wealth of idyll, how a woman can finally create her own unique vocal universe from it, this we have been able to experience and enjoy in the past few years when the Alpine-American Erica Stucky blesses us with her stage and CD presence. Now she invites us to a third audience with "Princess"- and we hear a nutty, playful, royally profound soundwork with blue and hot-blooded prominence en masse. A big and robust rival to the frail princess of the pea. ... more

Huge is the boom Scandinavian singers have triggered in the past few years. Rebekka Bakken, Kari Bremnes, Rigmor Gustafsson or Cæcilie Norby – Names like these are currently luring German jazz audiences into music halls and record stores, zealously forming a new definition of contemporary “Euro-Jazz” and effortlessly cutting its umbilical cord from the US schools. Until now the Finnish faction has been conspicuously missing on this new top team of noble Nordic voices. Kristina Tuomi presents herself as an exciting and original vocalist who puts Finland on the map of modern jazz song-writing – and this with trans-European flair and poetry from Poe to Shakespeare. ... more

Or are they feathery dream pillows you can float away on in reverie? ... more
