Frederik Köster wins ECHO Jazz Award Instrumentalist of the year - national - Brass
Congratulations!
Cologne Trumpeter Frederik Köster has won the award for Best National Brass Player at the ECHO Jazz Awards,
as announced by the German Recording Academy earlier today. The award is being
given for Köster's latest Traumton release, "Zeichen der Zeit". The
ECHO gala awards ceremony will take place in Centennial Hall in Bochum, Germany,
on May 5, and will be broadcast on television in Germany on WDR on May 8, starting
at 10:30 PM; a radio broadcast follows on May 11 at 8 PM on WDR 3.

Biography
Frederik Köster (14.10.1977) graduated in music teaching in Detmold, further in jazz trumpet
and jazz composition/arranging in Cologne.
He has studied with Oliver Groenewald, Andy Haderer, Ack van Rooyen, Bobby Shew,
John Marshall, Nils Wogram, Frank Reinshagen, Joachim Ullrich, Maria Schneider
and Michael Abene.
From 2001 to 2005 Frederik played with the Youth Jazz Orchestra of Germany (BuJazzO).
In addition to being featured as a solist, a variety of his compositions and
arrangements were played by this renowned ensemble under direction of Peter Herbolzheimer.
In 2007 Frederik was appointed professor for jazz trumpet at the Hochschule
für
Musik der Fachhochschule Osnabrück.
Based in Cologne, he has enjoyed playing with: Phil Woods, Albert Mangelsdorff,
Ack van Rooyen, Biréli Lagrene, Randy Brecker, Wolfgang Haffner, Hiram
Bullock, Jiggs Whigham, Rick Margitza, Lalo Shiffrin, Don Friedman, Paul
Heller, Niels Klein, Michael Wollny, Florian Weber, WDR Big Band, Peter Herbolzheimer’s
Rhythm Combination & Brass, Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra, Tom Gaebel & his
Big Band, Bobby Burgess Big Band Explosion, Subtone, Nina Hagen, Sportfreunde
Stiller, Curse, Jazzkantine u.v.m.
In September 2006 Frederik was awarded best soloist at the Jazz Hoeilaart International
Contest in Belgium. He has been on tour with a multitude of ensembles to Namibia,
South Africa, Austria, Switzerland, Spain, Holland, Poland, Great Britain,
Belgium, Bulgaria, Rumania and Albania.
The Frederik Köster quartet was awarded the Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis
2009, with Frederik additionally claiming first prize for best soloist.
Frederik has provided compositions and arrangemements for the Wednesday Night
Big Band, the Cologne Contemporary Jazz Orchestra (CCJO), the Bundesjugendjazzorchester
(BuJazzO), Tom Gäbel, Jugend Jazz Orchester NRW , the Grand Central Orchestra,
the Okotposse, Kicks’n Sticks, the Oliver Groenewald Newnet to name but
a few.
