A new formation with old friends, a particular sound with familiar vignettes: Other Animal plays “alternative prog-jazz”. The newest project of Bernhard and Peter Meyer, who take the key roles as composers and producers in this quartet, unites players from Berlin and New York who harmonize perfectly together and inspire each other. The Meyer brothers are best known for their highly acclaimed Melt Trio. With their distinct music and sophisticated stylistics on semi-acoustic bass and electric guitar, they have been contributing to the Berlin-specific jazz sound for years. Beside the already beaten paths of the genre, they fuse elements of improvised and new music, independent-rock and ambient sounds and show how jazz can sound in the present and the future. “Also on their third album, the Melt Trio again plays in a league of its own,” Jazzpodium summarizes and places Peter Meyer among the international ranks of the generation Marc Ribot, Jacob Bro and Marc Ducret. The magazine Rondo labels the trio as “one of the most stunning of the current jazz scene.” As a trio they have always enthralled listeners with their CDs and countless concerts and in addition, they explored other constellations - sometimes together, sometimes separately. For instance with the Norwegian electronica artist and live-remixer Jan Bang, the drum charismatics John Hollenbeck and Nasheet Waits, the exceptional singer Theo Bleckmann and the Portuguese double-bass original Carlos Bica. . . . read more
"Echoes of a Winter Journey" . Inspired by Schubert
This is music of memory. Music for lying on the floor at midnight. Contemplative, melancholy, fragile, beautiful.
For Paul Hankinson, creating a solo piano album felt like going home. "It took me a while to realise that the simplicity of the piano, the gentle familiarity of that emotional landscape I've been exploring my whole life, is enough. There is music in silence too, in the in-betweens."

In the past years no other young European jazz trio has evoked as many exuberant reactions as the Austrian formation Mario Rom’s INTERZONE. Just recently the sensational energy of their concerts led the young trio to the Montreal Jazz Festival, which was readily combined with another invitation to the renowned Rochester Jazz Festival, where they had played before. And even at these top-class festivals, INTERZONE doesn’t need to shun any comparison: “Never before, no matter where in this world, have I heard a group of musicians that - in the truest sense of the word - ‘plays’ together as incredibly as this trio. Certainly one of the most exciting and entertaining acts of the festival - an absolute must-see!” one of the main critics wrote. Such reactions in the American press are certainly noteworthy for an Austrian band with an age average of 30 years. And the trio, consisting of Mario Rom (born 1990), Lukas Kranzelbinder (born 1988) and Herbert Pirker (born 1981), really has been working inimitably consequently on their unique sound and image these past years. . . . read more

Lisbeth Quartett - There Is Only Make
Not only philosophers and quantum physicists know that time is relative. The Lisbeth Quartet has always had its own concept of time. This becomes apparent through the inner ease with which the band develops its sometimes transparent, sometimes dense music, in the studio and on stage. And through Charlotte Greve’s profound, partly lyrical and in the best sense timeless compositions that unite depth and unobtrusive lightness. The latter primarily results from Greve’s sensitive and masterful playing as well as her vibrant, floating saxophone tone. With patient determination, the Lisbeth Quartet has come a long way. It was founded in 2009, divided equally between New York and Berlin since 2012 and awarded a Jazz-Echo as newcomer of the year for its second CD Constant Travellers. The follow-up Framed Frequencies (01/2014) also received high praise, even internationally. “[Greve’s] music is an exciting and energetic process with subtle movement, stripped down to the bare essentials, down to an aesthetic of distinctive moods and intense emotion,” the Financial Times Germany wrote, and the Fono Forum said, “The quartet entices with compositions that are truly of our time, with a seasoned technique and a multi-faceted sound.” . . . read more

Erika Stucky - Papito
Erika Stucky is always full of surprises. Over a period of almost 25 years the singer, musician, songwriter and multimedia-artist has made many exciting international connections, for example with Dino Saluzzi, Carla Bley and even a guest appearance with Elvis Costello. Furthermore, she has developed many individual, often stunning, stylistically diversified formations during this time. Stucky’s newest work is starting a new chapter with unexpected content. Even in relation to her already courageous repertoire thus far, Papito seems audacious. The charismatic American-Swiss is joined by a Baroque ensemble, the widely celebrated countertenor Andreas Scholl and by FM Einheit, who is known as an unconventional percussionist, sound designer and also as creative force of the Einstürzende Neubauten. Considering this spectacular constellation, it is no wonder that Stucky’s variable voice develops facets that had seldom been heard until now. Without holding back any musical beauty she literally indulges herself in melodies and in sought out moments slips in touching crooning through trenchantly rough expression. . . . read more
